this is the worst question I have ever read on here.
Tae Kwon Do was copied from Karate.
Before Tae Kwon Do there was an art called, Taek Hyun a grapple art, with kicks.
Then the Japanese came and ruled Korea like in the late 1800's until 1950 something (the end of the Korean War). And during this time,
the Japanese taught Karate to many Koreans.
Then in the late 1950's after the Japanese were defeated and left the Korean peninsula, Tae Kwon Do was developed, thus coming from Karate.
Reading is good

And if you know anything about the history of Korea, you'll understand that truths are often misleading.
Taek Hyun has been around for thousands of years,
where as Tae Kwon Do, came from Karate, and influence from Taek Hyun too.
It is a very sensitive subject for Koreans because of the history.
Bottom line is, your friend is mistaken.
