Are bluetooth profiles determined by the software/drivers or the HARDWARE itself?

meaning if i have an old bluetooth dongle (2004) can I just upgrade its drivers to make it play stereo? (Im using stereo blutooth headphones but its playing mono music off the pc... dont kno why)
