digital optical opposed to HDMI? I would like to buy a surround sound system and a blue ray player however the surround sound I have selected only has a digital optical audio imput. No HDMI. Will I loose quality if I connect the blue ray direct to the TV via HDMI and to the surround sound via digit optical?

You won't loose the sound quality on Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 surround sound but you can't get the best sound like DTS-HD MA, Dolby True HD and uncompressed PCM up to 7.1 channel encoded on Blu-ray movies disc by connecting HDMI from Blu-ray player to receiver that has HD decoder on board.

You do not loose sound quality. This also depends on the blu ray disc audio if it is a 7.1 or DD or DTS True HD. The optical cable will only carry the 5.1 surround sound while the HDMI cable will carry the 7.1 audio with DD or DTD True HD. Your receiver also must be able to accept the signal in 7.1 True HD. Hope this will help you out.

Technically yes you will, because a fire optic cable can only support 5.1 channels of surround sound at the highest bit rate of 1.5 mbps, whereas a HDMI can scream through at 7.1 channels at 18+ mbps. So there is a big difference technically, but I use a fibre optic as well, and it sounds pretty damn good. And fibre is not susceptible to interference.
