Why are blu-ray movies widscreen not full HD taking up the whole screen.?

My Playstation 3 is hooked up with HDMI to my Sharp Aquos 32inch 1080p lcd screen.

Most blu-ray movies are just widescreen and don't take up the whole screen I can see that on standard TVS but I have and HD TV and want full use of the screen its already wide and providing them enough pixel to show you wide.
When I turned on Becoming Jane in blu-ray it was full screen but that movie was to boring to watch.
