I got a first gen PS2 when I was eighteen, and I am 26 now. It still plays DVDs just fine, except for very new discs, but I think that's just a format issue. Even still, the new games just take a few minutes to be recognized.
I've heard of problems with the drive in the PS3 breaking down more easily if you use it as a Blu-Ray player, but I use mine as one all the time because I really don't think it's an issue, considering how long my PS2 lasted.
Think about it logically, a game disc reads data from all over the disc, so the reader has to constantly work to access different areas. With a movie, all it does is spin and access each chapter one after another. It's like the difference between city and highway driving. Considering this, I think gaming is much more likely to ruin your PS3 than movies are. Plus, the PS3 is nearly unmatched as far as a quality BD player goes.
