Using Ps3 as a blueray player.?

Is it true that using your ps3 as a blueray/dvd playback machine will cause the blueray drive to fail after a short while? I saw people on other forums saying that when the ps2 was used for dvd playback this caused it to fail much quicker and the same will happen in a ps3.

i used my ps2 as my soul source of watching dvd's for years and never had a problem and i use my ps3 for blue rays all the time now, no it's not true why would it be a feature if it would cause problems for the system.

that makes no sense considering that all ps3 games are on bluerays and all ps2 games are on DVD. so no that can't be true, heck i still have my original ps2 too. so they are just coming up with excuses to why there system crashed

All optical drives fail after a few years of normal use.

Using ps2 to play dvd's didn't do anything but put more wear on the dvd laser than just playing games would.

Normal ps2's lasted about 4 to 5 years of normal use playing both games and dvd's.

For ps3's and blu-rays it's about the same deal. If you use it for both, the drive will play blu-ray for about 4 or 5 years, probably. Nobody really knows cause the oldest are going on 3 years old. Mine is one of them (a cecha-01 launch unit) and it still plays everything perfect. I have used dvd's more than blu-ray's, but no failures at all. If you don't play a lot of blu-rays, it might last another year or two.

So, you can buy a separate blu-ray player for $200, or you can just use the ps3 for blu-rays, which it's very good at, and then have to replace the drive for $99 in 5 years instead of 6 years. Much better deal to just use the ps3.

It IS a good idea to use a separate dvd player, though. Since dvd players are a dime a dozen and everyone has one, you might as well spare the wear on the ps3's dvd diode.

I got a first gen PS2 when I was eighteen, and I am 26 now. It still plays DVDs just fine, except for very new discs, but I think that's just a format issue. Even still, the new games just take a few minutes to be recognized.

I've heard of problems with the drive in the PS3 breaking down more easily if you use it as a Blu-Ray player, but I use mine as one all the time because I really don't think it's an issue, considering how long my PS2 lasted.

Think about it logically, a game disc reads data from all over the disc, so the reader has to constantly work to access different areas. With a movie, all it does is spin and access each chapter one after another. It's like the difference between city and highway driving. Considering this, I think gaming is much more likely to ruin your PS3 than movies are. Plus, the PS3 is nearly unmatched as far as a quality BD player goes.

No. PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player out there in the market.

It runs it so smoothly compared to the cheaper ones in the market. A really good Blu-Ray player should cost at least $199.99, but for only $100 you could get a PS3, so why not?

fat chance the ps3 is leaps above the ps2 in terms of hardware...ps2 was like a bad pentium...ps3 is a tricore processor of raw power..the graphics card is insane good luck burning it out...most games are 1080p compatible anyway
