Playstation 3 or Blu-ray disk player?

Im planning on buying a Blu ray disk player for my dad (and family) for christmas. Im a lttle slow when it comes to technology so any advice would be appreciated.
what is the difference between a ps3 and a blu ray disk player (besides that the ps3 plays games). I know that the blu ray player will play regular dvds and make them a bit better...can i play regular dvds on the ps3 as well?
I kind of want to buy the ps3, but like I said Im a little slow with tech. so I don;t know what is best.
I dont know if this helps but I have a 40" LCD 1080i tv.

OOHHH and can I use the 5.1 surround system with the ps3.

thank you

If you can afford it($399) go with the PS3. It's features rival players that cost 3-4 times as much. The PS3 also has built-in wifi which is nice so you can download firmware updates directly onto the PS3. You can also acess BD Live which are extra bonus features on some blu ray movies that require an internet connection. Most other blu ray players do not have wifi so the only way to acess it is to run an ethernet cable from a router to the player... and that's just a pain. With the PS3, no wires are needed(for internet at least)

And the PS3 will play all of your old standard DVDs.

And yes, you can use you 5.1 surround sound as long as your receiver has the correct inputs(either HDMI(both audio and video) or Component(video) w/ Optical(for surround sound))

Yes you can use the PS3 as both a Blu-ray player and a regular DVD player.
Yes, you can connect it to surround. Good choice.
