Will regular digital cable and a regular dvd player work just as well? How much worse is the picture without the HD receiver?

You don't have to have anything. But it is recommended that if you have HD tv you also get HD cable or disc network. Your old dvd will work but the blu ray disc movies are much sharper on your HD tv. Some cable (like cox cable in california) will have HD channels without paying for it. Hope this will help you out.

Non HD equipment will work fine with an HDTV, however you won't be using the full resolution of your fancy TV, and it may look worse than on a low-def TV, depending on the quality of the signal processing in your TV.

some do and some don't, you should ask your manufacturer this question. if it is a samsung tv, go to their website, they have knowledgeable and friendly people who assist you for this.

but if you have an HDTV, i'd get the HD service, and the blu ray, might well, unleash that TV!
