What digital single reflex camera and lens options are best for what I want to do?

I've been interested in photography now for 6 or 7 years after inheriting my father's Nikon F401x, another Nikon (I believe also from the F series family), a small Yashica 35mm slr, and a huge collection of Nikkor lenses. I also have a small Canon g7 point and shoot.

I've become particularly fond of street, portraiture, some macro, candid, nature photography, and something my friend likes to call 'secret photography.'

Despite all this, I know nothing about digital slr cameras and am looking to invest in one long-term. I had been contemplating the Canon EOS 40d and weighing it against the Nikon D300 (because I'm already familiar with Nikon slr's).

What camera would be the best option for what I want to do? It doesn't even have to be the EOS 40D or the D300. Any recommendations on particular lenses?

Thanks!
