Ok to disconnect satellite speakers from subwoofer?

I have a set of Z-2300's that is two years old. The sub is still good, but the satellites are on their way out. I ordered a set of X-540's and I was wondering if I could run the X-540's along with only the Z-2300 subwoofer. I've heard that it can overheat like this, but I need to know for sure.

It could but shouldn't. The sub draws most of the power from the amp irrespective of what else is connected. The only concern would be an impedance issue. The sub may already be running 4 ohms, and dropping below this could damage the amp (I assume the sub is self-amped, probably powering the satellites as well).

How many X-540s do you plan to run? Even if you're running just 2 and the sub, you should be okay. I've been doing it with a Kliptsch set for over two years since I cracked the enclosure on one of my rear satellites. Of course, I've also got a Dell 5.1 set connected as well as an output to a separate amp with 4 more speakers including 2 x 12" subs, and a wireless amp powering 2 more rear speakers on an adjustable reverb. The whole system serves as an instrument amping system as well (the set with the 12" subs is primarily for drums).
