Satellite question, can you get software to get a Sony Digital Satellite

Receiver picking up free satellite TV Model: Sony Digital Satellite Receiver V.8.94, used for picking up DirectTV...it's the one with the SIM cards (we used football cards). Wondering if this thing can work again without having to buy a new box. It has a seriel port for data transfer so thought you might be able to load some software to get free satellite.
