Is it possible to over-charge my Canon PowerShot's battery?

I'm going somewhere tonight where I'll probably want to take pictures, and I'm thinking my camera might not have a whole lotta battery left because I've used it quite a bit since I last charged it. I don't know exactly how long my battery lasts because I just got my camera a couple weeks ago. Is it possible to over-charge these batteries so they end up not lasting as long?

Cuz I want to charge my battery so I know it won't die tonight, but if there's a possibility of my over-charging it if I charge it too much too many times, I'll probably just take it and hope it doesn't die!
