Is it just me, or is "ray-surfing" on Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii freaking HARD?

I'm playing Super Mario Galaxy on my Wii and have just made it to the Flipside Galaxy and have to learn how to "ray-surf". I've tried over and over and over but I can't seem to get the hang of it. Do I just suck, or was it that hard for everybody else?
