ipod touch question...help?

i got a ipod touch and then i got a gift card for itunes. so i went to redeem and typed the password in and it said it wasnt activated. so i went back to the store and asked what was wrong. so they tried it and it didnt work for them. so they took another giftcard and it didnt work either. please help
