I am recording vinyl from my mixer?

using sound forge,but theres way too much bass distortion
i turned the gains down,turned down the booth level.
Any ideas?
Not tried compressing it yet as i dont want to dull the sound too much.The levels say they are ok,no where near clipping but the distortion stays there
