How does Dish Network and DirectTV work?

Time Warner cable has hit new lows, and I'm thinking of going satellite. What are the advantages/disadvantages of satellite? What about the two main companies? Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with them either first-hand or by hearing or reading anything?
