How do you equalize the sound with the Bose Companion 2 Speaker set?

I recently purchased a set of Bose Compaion 2 speakers and have hooked them up to the microphone port on my laptop however I am having trouble with the sound. Whenever I listen to music the left speaker only plays up to a certain volume without the right speaker. When the sound is increased to the necessary level only the right speaker picks up sound. Any advice out there for me yahoo goers?
