How can I fix this speaker problem?

I just got some new Creative SBS20 speakers that are 9V DC powered, and my old speaker power cord is universal, so I set it to 9V DC, plugged them into my speakers, turned them on, and the power light doesn't light up and the speakers buzz. How can I fix it?

Also, these speakers were used, but my brother hooked them up to his laptop with a power cord he had and they worked great.
