Why is 0.5 added to the Z value of a bell curve?

Say for example the question is what percentage of people are shorter 174cm tall? If the std Deviation is is 12cm and the mean is 165cm

ie z= (174 - 165) / 12 = 0.75

Pr (z < 0.75) = Area = 0.5 + z(0.75) =0.5 +0.2734 = 0.7734

Just wondering where the 0.5 comes from.

Any information on Areas under normal distribution (bell) curves would be helpful too. Thank you
