Can an individual alter text messages that they send or that are sent to them, to say something other than what was originally stated in the text?
Yes, it can in a sense. If the person you sent it to forwards it to a third party, they can "edit" what you "texted". But keep in mind that legally, if say, someone files charges against you... All they have to do is subpoena your cell phone records, and they will see the txt as you sent it. Check with sprint, but i am pretty sure that the legal dept would agree that there has to be a court order in order to gain access to your phone records.
