My car always stalls if I'm going a distance of 10 or more miles. I've found if I'm going a steady speed,its better; but if i am at a stop light and i push on the gas pedal, it starts to completely shut down and the check engine light comes on. is it fixable? please help, do not want to buy new car if its not necessary.

try a new fuel filter and add a bottle of fuel treatment.. if that dont get it do a tuneup

I had a 92 Chev Cavalier with the same problem. It just needed a tune up. Problem is the distributor cap and roter are in side the block and can not be replaced. I replaced plugs and wires but could not replace the cap and roter. The car was done and had to be scrapped.

Take it to a shop and see if new plugs wires will work. But plan on the worst. These cars are pretty much disposable.
