I've got a 2001 escape and it's starting to rattle and squeel. It's been running high on the rpms for a bit now and last night it started to make a rattling noise that sounded like the coolant was boiling which I found was not the case after checking the temp and levels. I took it to Autozone to get a diagnostic and it threw one code that could mean the cat converter is going bad either with a fracture or a leak into the exhaust. I know I ought to get it checked out by a pro, but I'm worried that just finding out what the exact problem is will cost me a lot more than I can afford right now. The ford dealerships in my area of Nashville have some pretty awful reviews online so I'm wondering if I should take my chances with a regular auto service shop or just rip out the catalytic converter and hope for the best. Any suggestions?
