before he was president he was a senator and came up with the spot resolution, which was one of the disputes in the mexican war
the south seceded from the union, created the confederacy
suspension of the habeaus corpus without asking congress for approval

Nevada became a state.

Construction began on the transcontinental railroad.

Bigger than the Civil War? - Hummmm..... The congress passed the Homestead act. Oh, maybe elsewhere in the world.

African American Slaves were freed and given citizenship rights as laid out in his Emancipation Proclamation (including the right to vote).

The Battle of Gettysburg took place in Pennslyvania and Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address to honor those who died.

He was shot and killed 5 days after the Union won the civil war.
