I believe Lincoln said whatever his constituency wanted to hear.
I have heard that near the end of the Civil War when Northern Generals wanted to make the South pay. The claimed it was God's will. Lincoln said "We don't know what God's will is, we must use our own judgement."
Lincoln believed God was on both sides of the war.
...the Union cause in the Great War?

TERRY W: Yes, many are unaware that at the time of the Civil War many called it the Great War.
In fact in the Gettysburg Address Lincoln calls it the Great Civil War. Compared to the statistics of modern warfare, that war continues to stand alone in carnage.
Usually both sides think that God is for them in any war. Even Hitler thought this.
Oh I did not know that Pres.Lincoln was around in WW1. After all the world usually refers to the First World war as the great war.
As to 'considering God to be empowering', all leaders do it. its just a way of getting guys to kill without question.
Let's see:
Union: Freedom.
South: Slavery.
Yes, I think he was justified in saying that God supported the cause of the Union.
