Limewire is free, and legal. Right up until the point you download any copyrighted material.
they get away with it by saying its to share each others home-written documents etc.
You just type the song name in, and it comes up. double click it, and it downloads. its illegal though, unless of course its a song they have written and recorded themselves (as if!)
