Why is the UK viewed as a right-wing country?

I don't see what is so right-wing about the UK.

- We are a high tax country; high tax is not a right-wing policy.

- Our current government is weakening the military.

- We have completely socialized health care, in Australia and Switzerland for example you have to pay a portion of the costs.

- Our immigration system is pretty lax and an attempt by the Conservative party to put a limit on the number of immigrants from outside the EU has been blocked and ruled illegal by the high court. That's not example a right-wing thing to do.

- Our institutions and local councils are generally extremely politically correct and not being in any way offensive to ethnic minorities is one of their main priorities. You can get the sack for making a comment in jest about an ethnic minority.

- We have the largest publicly funded broadcaster in the world. To put that into perspective a lot of European countries don't even pay a TV license.

- We also have a culture of many scroungers living for very long periods of time on the dole and doing no work when they are perfectly able to do so. In some countries it's not possible to do this because you can only be on benefits for a year or two, but in the UK it is possible to be on them indefinitely, there is no real cut off point.

- Also, the BNP is one of the smallest far-right parties in Europe. In France, the Front National gets double the number of votes the BNP does, and in the Netherlands, Geert Wilder's party is the third largest party in the whole country with 24 seats in parliament.

I wouldn't go as far to say we're a socialist country, but we're certainly a "centre-left" country, as opposed to centre-right or right-wing.

Right-wing by European standards is Italy, Greece, Poland, Switzerland, etc, and we're certainly more left than that.
