Where can I learn about basic ford wiring?

I have a 1966 Ford Mustang. I have a MAllory distributor, hyfire box and promaster coil. I recently installed an electric fan and an electric fuel pump. I want them both to start when the key is on and turn off when the key is off. I know they need to draw power from different sources because the fan needs alot to drive it.
The problem is that I can't seem to power the fan and fuel pump. If I use the ignition for either the car won't stay started. The fuel pump's black wire is grounded to the body and the red wire is connected to the the small brown wire on the front of the starter solenoid. The pump wont start. If I take that same red wire and touch it to the pos terminal on the battery the pump starts. Is this a circuit thing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
