What style/cut should I get for my hair?

I have very thick, very curly hair and I want some long bangs, but my friends say that since my hair is so curly, it would end up just curling up against my head. I was hoping for some long, nice side swept bangs like the one in the photo(s), but I'm not sure. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much!
