Were the first Christians Atheists?

Yes, I'm serious. Think about it. Whether or not he truly existed, Jesus Christ was probably a hero to anyone who refused to believe, obey and worship a dark, jealous, genocidal maniac who had a well documented obsession with the smell of incinerating flesh. After brilliantly creating "the illusion" that he was the son of the evil spiritual predator of the O.T., he proceeded "with authority" to wipe out every cruel, oppressive, hypocritical and unjust law of ancient Zion and replaced them with one simple rule which protects human life and brings freedom into civilizations. (Love your neighbor as you love yourself.)

Atheists generally do not have a problem with Christians who try to follow this simple rule. But most of them have a huge problem with Christians who try to force them to honor and obey the evil god of the O.T. who commanded the merciless death of anyone who refused to worship him...

All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman. 2Chronicles 15:13

And they have a bigger problem with Christians who try to enact laws which force them to observe "the fully abolished" law of Moses...which is "precisely" why they murdered him...

Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? Hebrews 10:28-29

So should it be any wonder that the people who DID NOT observe the law of Moses in ancient Zion were the first to follow Jesus Christ...

Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”

“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.

“You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.” John 7:45-49

While the church has certainly brought a lot of bloodshed into this world by following the law of Moses (against the teachings of J.C.), could you imagine how bad things might be for the nonbeliever today if there wasn't "a great liberator" known as Jesus Christ?

I am asking this question to anyone who has "thoroughly" and "fearlessly" read both the Old and New Testament.

What this message is referring to is that when society matured God sent Jesus to teach a new way of living and worshiping under new more humane rules that we call the New Covenant which in no way rejects let alone condemns God.:damn fly:

I don't think you really understand the roots of Christianity.

It began as one of many Jewish sects at the time. This sect of Judaism held that Jesus was the Christ, sent from God, and the fulfilment of the covenant. It was Paul who really allowed it flourish, as he spread it and it became a dominant religion. Constantine was also a huge part of this.

At no point has the religion that held the Nazarene to be the son of 'GOD' (that bit is worth emphasizing) been atheistic.

If Christianity were true, it would have proven itself by now. It wouldn't need "defenders" for the last 2000 years.

So obviously, something is very very wrong here.
