This week in safety: A recall incentive

[SIZE=-1] In terms of size, the recall of 850 Bush Hog off-road utility vehicles this week was a small one. But what caught our attention was the company's offer of a $50 incentive check to owners who take their machines to a dealer for inspection and repair. That's a good idea. So is the fact that the company is notifying all registered owners.

The problem with the vehicle is that the throttle cable can lock in freezing temperatures. This can cause the engine not to return to idle when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator pedal, posing a risk of loss of vehicle control and injury to the driver and/or passenger. In June 2008, Bush Hog recalled 4,000 off-road vehicles for a similar problem after receiving 52 incident reports including one leg fracture.

This recall includes the Bush Hog models TH4400 (Trail Hand) and 4430 4X4 with hood colors in red, green, or mossy oak. They were sold by Bush Hog dealerships nationwide from April 2008 to December 2008 for between $8,000 and $10,000.

Bush Hog is encouraging owners to take their vehicles in whether or not they operate them in cold weather. For more information, call (877) 873-0143 or visit the company's Web site.
