Suppose the CEO of a big telecommunications company wants to put a geosynchronous satellite in orbit so that it always remains directly above New York City. How would you explain to him that such an orbit is not possible even though geosynchronous satellites can be placed in orbits that allow them to always remain directly above certain other places on Earth?

Geosynchronous satellites can always remain directly above only places on the Equator. New York is not on the equator.

Geosynchronous satellites are used by telecommunication companies for the past many years
and they are real. The change of position is negligible over the working life of satellite and they do their job well.

Geosynchronous orbits are at 36,000 kilometers where the orbital speed is matched by earths rotational speed and they have to be at the equator or it will appear to move up and down while it moves along in its orbit. So no it cannot be done.
