The Cowboys were up 28-21 late in the third quarter and hungry for more after an uneven first half. They drove from their own 5-yard line to the Detroit 10 and were poised to step on the Lions’ necks. Dak Prescott appeared to be running a little option play with Ezekiel Elliott, who had scored two touchdowns, which drew the attention of the defense.
But watch as Dez Bryant comes into the picture, going the opposite direction …
Check out Lions linebacker DeAndre Levy —*he’s the guy starting for the first time since Week 1 who is out in space with Bryant. You can tell he doesn’t want to get burned to the edge for a touchdown, but it appeared the last thing he was expecting was the lefthanded pass from Bryant, who had not attempted a pass in his first 95 regular-season games.
It was Bryant’s first career TD pass, and he became only the second player since the NFL merger in 1970 to catch two TD passes and throw for another in a single game.
Great call by offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, and great execution. It was the tipping point for what became a 42-21 blowout by the Cowboys in a dominant second half. Bryant to Witten, and just like that it was a 14-point lead. How about that for a Cowboys play: Prescott, Elliott, Bryant and Witten —*the four horsemen maybe? — involved in what might have been the prettiest trick play we’ve seen in some time.
And yes, we saw Dontari Poe’s jump-pass TD. That was more hilarious than pretty in our eyes. Week 16 has been a fun one for the trickery, eh?
