Just as the football world was getting to know Jimmy Garoppolo, the New England Patriots’ third-year quarterback with the matinee-idol looks (maybe an animated idol, but still) who started the team’s first two games of the season with Tom Brady serving his four-game suspension, it’s time to learn about a different young Patriots QB.
In the first half of Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins, Garoppolo was taken down by linebacker Kiko Alonso, landing hard on his throwing shoulder. The good news is it sounds like Garoppolo got pretty lucky after testing showed only a sprained AC joint.
While he could be back for the Patriots’ fourth game of the season, against Buffalo, all reports say he’ll be out for New England’s Thursday night game against the Houston Texans.
The next man up? Rookie Jacoby Brissett.
Brissett, the 91st overall pick in this year’s draft, out of North Carolina State, will become the first rookie in over 20 years to start a game at quarterback for the Patriots, since the team took Drew Bledsoe with the No. 1 pick in 1993 and he started 12 games that year.

Jacoby Brissett scrambles against the Dolphins (AP) Listed at 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, Brissett is a West Palm Beach, Fla., native who began his college playing career at the University of Florida. He transferred to North Carolina State after two years and was the Wolfpack’s starter for the 2014 and ’15 seasons, totaling 5,268 yards and 43 touchdowns against 11 interceptions.
Among his advisers:*former NFL safety Abram Elam and Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells. Elam is from the same area as Brissett, and Parcells, who lives in Jupiter, Fla., struck up a friendship with the young man while he was just a teenager at Dwyer High School.
Parcells, of course, coached the New England Patriots in the 1990s. When Parcells was previously with the New York Giants, his defensive coordinator was one Bill Belichick.
“He’s just an awesome kid. He’s awesome,” Parcells told the Boston Globe of Brissett. “He’s got great character, he’s committed, and I just have a very high regard for him personally.”
And Parcells isn’t Brissett’s only Patriots tie. Brissett was recruited to Florida by Charlie Weis, who was Belichick’s offensive coordinator for New England’s Super Bowl wins in 2001, 2003 and 2004 (Weis had Brady talk to Brissett’s mother over the phone to help convince Lisa Brown that her son would be taken care of by the coach; when Weis left Florida, the new Gators coaches made it known they preferred Jeff Driskel at quarterback).
Now Brissett, the only player in this year’s draft without an agent, will make an unexpected start against one of the toughest defenses in the NFL. He fared pretty well against the Dolphins on Sunday when he was thrown into the fire, completing 6 of 9 passes for 92 yards and leading a second-half scoring drive.
He and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will have a short week to get ready to face the Texans. New England hosts Buffalo in Week 4, with either Brissett getting the nod again or perhaps Garoppolo will be well enough to play. Brady returns in Week 5, when the Patriots play in Cleveland.
