Nissan Maxima 92, about 172000 miles. Filled up with 11.8
gallons of 85 unleaded gasoline. Drown 1 mile. Engine started to
loose power. RPMs dropped. Pressing on accelerator did not help much.
The car was behaving like more than one of fuel injectors did not work.
Or fuel supply cut off. Barely made another mile to my drive way then
the car almost stalled. Turned off the ignition. Waited for an hour.
Turned it on again. The engine started instantly as it is suppose
to be on higher RPMs, then after 3 seconds began to loose RPMs.
Engine begins jumping and jerking. Stalls in 5-7 seconds.
It does same thing all the times. Tryed that dozens of times.
After starter is done, the engine starts great with high RPMs, then stalls in 5-7 seconds.
The Check Engine Light does not show up any faults, but it is known as working.
Some diagnostics done.
*1. Pinched return fuel line with wise grips.
Result: Starts great, runs ok for 5-10 seconds, then begins to loose RPMs.
Does not stall completely, but runs jumping and jerking at low RPMs.
The engine stalls in 3 secs when pinch of the return line is removed.
Actions taken – Replaced fuel filter - did not help. No improvements.
*2. Replaced Fuel Pressure Regulator – Did not help.
*3. Checked the Fuel pressure with “inline gauge” ( three way T- connector) – gauge
shows 38-41 PSI, (specification is 38psi) when engine starts and about 33 psi when it
stops. This pressure of 33 psi remains for long time when engine is off.
Could not see a difference when disconnected the vacuum hose from the
Fuel pressure regulator.
*4. Fuel Pump can be heard for 3-4 secs when ignition is in Position ON,
without engine running.
The sound is OK, the fuel flows. However the sound is different (and not healthy)
when the return Fuel line is pinched.
*5. Drained 12 gallons of gasoline, added 1 gallon of known good one – did not help.
However there was remaining 4-5 gallons of suspicious gasoline.
*6. Tried to poor some known good gasoline into the Fuel Line close to engine (between fuel filter)
and Fuel Injectors rail – No changes noted.
**Question: Can anyone help with suggestions?
***Note – this car used to stall after engine wash several times.
One time it stalled when I ran over a puddle of rain water.
Was not really deep. There were a lot of splashes though.
Every time this happens due to wetness, it dries up for 20-60 minutes and runs again.
