Is it a crossover or an SUV?

What distinguishes an SUV from a crossover vehicle? In some cases it's obvious, but I have seen some vehicles I considered SUVs classified as crossovers. Is it size, engine size, off road capability or something else that makes the difference?

Crossovers are built on car platforms. The Nissan Murano and Altima share a platform. SUVs share platforms with light trucks. For example, the previous generation Nissan Pathfinder shared platform with the Titan. SUVs tend to have higher center of gravity and are generally larger vehicles. Many come with V6 or an optional V8. Some recent crossovers like the Nissan Rogue, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorrento, and Toyota Venza come with I4 standard. This usually results to a more compact and fuel efficient vehichle. Crossovers usually have front wheel drive or all wheel drive for a very a relatively higher price. SUVs are usually RWD or AWD.
