Fan critically injured after falling down elevator shaft at Fenway Park

Boston authorities are attempting to piece together what exactly happened late Friday night when a fan at Fenway Park was critically injured after falling two floors down an elevator shaft and landing on the top of the elevator car at Gate B in right field.
The incident happened a little after 11:15 p.m. local time as the crowd was filing out following the Red Sox game against the Detroit Tigers. Initial reports say the door unexpectedly opened and a 22-year-old woman fell into the shaft and landed on the elevator car which was reportedly occupied at the time.
Details were slow to roll in early Saturday morning, but Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston did send out a string of tweets overnight which shed some light on the incident and the condition of fan, who was not identified by name.

They climbed through the roof of the elevator car and found her unconscious, according to Boston fire dispatch

She was transported by ambulance to Beth Israel Hospital. No further details on her condition are known. State elevator inspector on scene

According to a club source, the 22 year old woman is in critical but stable condition, the source said she is a recent college graduate

Edes also added that reports he'd heard suggested the fan had her back to the doors when they opened. State and city elevator inspectors were confirmed to be on scene overnight so an investigation was underway quickly. However, no immediate explanation as to why the doors opened was found.*
Fans were detoured away from that section of the stadium while emergency crews performed the rescue and prepared the patient for transport. The Detroit Tigers were also forced to find an alternate route to their bus because the visiting team exit was right near where the incident took place.
