Last year’s game between Arkansas and Ole Miss was instant classic and this year’s rematch wasn’t bad either.
The Razorbacks scored with two minutes and 20 seconds remaining and then stripped Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly on what would be the Rebels’ final offensive play to come away with a 34-30 victory.
It marks the third straight win for the Razorbacks over the Rebels.
The game was the kind of back-and-forth affair we’ve come to expect from these two teams in recent history. While Arkansas led the majority of the game, neither Arkansas nor Ole Miss ever had more than an eight-point lead as the teams traded scores throughout. In the fourth quarter, Ole Miss cut Arkansas’ 27-20 lead with a field goal and then a 17-yard run by Kelly with 9 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Rebels their first lead. But Arkansas, led by quarterback Austin Allen who had 229 yards passing and three touchdowns, used 10 plays to go 56 yards in 4:39 and capped the drive with a 6-yard run by receiver Jared Cornelius, who was lined up in the backfield.
Ole Miss tried to mount the late comeback, but Kelly took a sack on third down and then, while attempting to run for the first down on fouth-and-16, he had the ball knocked out of his grasp and out of bounds to end any ideas of a comeback.
Arkansas, which had lost back-to-back games against Texas A&M and Alabama, needed the win to stay in the hunt for the SEC West title (though that’s probably a pipe dream). Ole Miss, which came into the season with high expectations, is now 3-3 on the season and, like Arkansas, 1-2 in league play.
