The Olympic Aquatics Stadium has been buzzing, and it will continue on Monday. American swimmer Michael Phelps was able to win a gold medal in the 4×100-meter relay on Sunday and teammate Katie Ledecky got herself a gold with a side of world-record time.
Both swimmers will be in the pool today attempting to build on their Olympic successes, but these aren’t the only notable stories. Defending Olympic champions and historic first timers are also on the schedule for Day 3 of the Games.
Morning slot:
U.S. field hockey wasn’t mentioned in the last*viewer’s guide because Argentina was supposed to win handily. *
That*mistake won’t be made again.
USA’s field hockey team will be kicking off Day 3 at 9 a.m. ET on NBCSN with a game against Australia two days after knocking off No. 2 Argentina with a stunning 2-1 victory. *It doesn’t get any easier for the U.S., as the Australians entered the Olympics as the No. 3 team in the world.
Stay on NBCSN to watch two-time Olympic gold medalist Mariel Zagunis compete in women’s fencing. Ibtihaj Muhammad also makes her debut in the same event as the first Muslim-American woman to compete with a hijab. You can also watch NBC’s daytime coverage at 10 a.m. ET as the U.S. men’s water polo team attempts to bounce back from its tough loss against Croatia.
Finish your morning by watching Team USA women’s basketball take on Spain at 11 a.m. ET on NBCSN. The U.S. women are looking to win their sixth straight gold medal.
Afternoon slot:
Swimming highlights the noon ET window, as Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky and Missy Franklin will all be in the pool trying to qualify for the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter freestyle, respectively.
If that does not interest you, there are equestrian events on USA Network and a women’s volleyball match on MSNBC between China and Italy at the same time.
At 2 p.m. ET on NBC, the women of U.S. volleyball continue their quest for their first gold medal against the Netherlands after winning their first international competition at the 2015 World Cup.
Like shotguns and watching things explode? Tune in to MSNBC at 3 p.m. ET to finish the afternoon slot off with men’s trap shooting.* MSNBC’s coverage will also include the gold medal round of judo, and Olympic sailing.
Primetime slot:
Get your night started with men’s basketball as Team USA continues its journey*for a third straight gold medal against Venezuela in group play at 6 p.m. ET. *Carmelo Anthony, who has been on the men’s national team since 2004, will become the new leader in games played for the Americans.
After that, switch over to NBC at 8 p.m. and stay there.
Men’s synchronized diving is first in NBC’s coverage with 2012 bronze medalist David Boudia hoping to improve on his podium finish with new partner Steele Johnson. Stay for men’s gymnastics, where the U.S. is looking to avenge their poor medal round performance in 2012.
Next on NBC is swimming coverage where Michael Phelps will be performing his signature 200-meter butterfly stroke in the semifinal round. *Also in action are Ledecky and Franklin, who will be swimming to get to the medal round of the 200-meter freestyle. Also swimming will be Conor Dwyer, who is looking like a medal contender after the 200-meter freestyle semifinal swim last night.
Just like two nights ago, Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross will be closing out primetime coverage on NBC. *They will be facing off against Fan Wang and Yuan Yue, who escaped a controversial finish in their last match.
