When you get a "lift" on your SUV/Jeep/truck, how does that help in off-roading?
Don't the axles stay in their original positions and, therefore, you never really gained any ground clearance? Or is the purpose of the lift so that you can put much larger tires on and then get the axles higher...

I recently moved to interior Alaska and my dinky Honda CRV is not cutting it anymore. I'm looking for a heavy duty truck that can take the snow and off-roading (mostly desert and dirt road stuff, not so much mud). I'd love to get something used but have a very flexible budget.
Suggestions?

Thanks
