im having a similar noise with my 1.4 but it might just be it needing its oil changed its due a service and the oil is burning off! but it sounds like a rocket i drive it and it sounds like i have a muffler on the exhaust its that loud when i take off!
ive just heard that they were dodgy! they killed the lens makes sense if you think about the way the ps2 dies
the nonbackwards compatible one doesnt support the games and therefore uses a different system!
they might have just discontinued it because it was too expensive for them to be putting 2...
It would really depend how much you wanted it.
It might be worth the repair since you got the car for free. If you don't want it, the resale value should be more then you payed for a fix-up.

right i was driving about 2 hours and during the end of my journey i noticed the clutch was giving a click feeling in the pedal also the accelerator started pushing up as i dropped the clutch... just a small judder as i dropped the clutch! then i could drive normally till i had to change gear...
