yes this car is very reliable powerful, and nice enough for a high school kid. it would be a great car for high school, as long as you don't have to pay for gas cause the gas milage is around 16mpg. it's also safe. i don't know what insurance would cost, but gas would probably be around 2k maybe...
if I were you, i would keep the buick. your buick has better reliability and crash test results than the pontiac. also, your buick has a higher "customer satisfaction rating" than the pontiac. so my advice is to save your money and don't buy the grand am.
high end cars are much more difficult to work on. they have a lot more computer related issues. they also generally tend to have more features than your average chevrolet or volkswagen, so they have a higher number of things that could possilby end up going wrong with them.
